*bows his head in a moment of silence* May he rest in peace...he lived a long life filled with great purpose, while I am not a religious man, I respected him greatly. That he was the first non-Italian in almost five centuries to achieve that holy post is ground breaking as it is...but I digress. *bows his head once more and sends a silent prayer to the heavens*

May he finally rest in peace
It was so sad to keep seeing an obviously ill man being propped up like a corpse for his public appearances

WHat a wonderfully adept statesman, as well as a man of God. RIP.

I was fortunate to be able to attend a Mass at which he was the principal celebrant some years back. I was not able to see him up close, but it's still a memory I'll cherish the rest of my life.
He was a wonderful man, both as a man of God and as a human being. He did so much to bring reconcilliation between the Church and other religions. He also had much to do with the fall of Communism.
May he Rest In Peace.

Amen to that, Sharni...
He was such a strong leader in many ways, & where he may have failed in other areas may well be because he was so powerful he weakened the bishops' powers to tend to the day-to-day operations...in any case, his strength & grace will be hard to replace...
