nikki1979~ may I recommend checking the belt, that is what usually causes a vacum to smoke and get that burnt rubber smell. It is usually quite easy to replace just requires a new belt and a screwdriver. Btw...if you take the cover off where your beater brush is you will see a broken piece of rubber(if it is infact a broken belt)
