Anyone Else..

Receiving blank emails from fellow pixie members that are over 100k's and when you open it up there is nothing there????

This has been happening in the past few days....

Lilith 09-08-2002 12:35 PM

not me

Sharni 09-08-2002 01:15 PM

Nope.....not me either

Sugarsprinkles 09-08-2002 02:05 PM

Well, as you know Diva...I have received several.....one of which supposedly came from you.....
I'd love to know what's going on.

I ran a virus scan and it found nothing...I'm truly mystified.

Lovediva 09-08-2002 02:21 PM

I have no virus also..but still getting emails with no attachements.

I think it has something to do with Irish's problem.....and it's emailling it's self to the ones in his addy book...

m45 09-08-2002 03:00 PM

I have been getting the e's with nothing but the W32.Klez.
Nothing in the body and the infected attachment.
YA for Norton!

GermanSteve 09-08-2002 04:56 PM

I can send you a test mail if needed. Let me know it.

Midnight Kiss 09-08-2002 08:39 PM

well I have never found the pixies mail at all.................................

Sugarsprinkles 09-09-2002 05:40 AM

MidnightKiss,
These didn't come in Pixie's mail...at least mine didn't. They came in my own personal e-mail box.

And BTW, each of the crazy e-mails I received had different subject lines. The most recent one purported to be from Yahoo's "post office" and stated that something it says I tried to send to Murphy was not able to be sent. And I never sent anything to Murphy with the subject it gave and besides why would I send him e-mail when I know it's very rare these days for him to be able to get online to read it?? This is truly strange!!!

dicksbro 09-09-2002 06:00 AM

I've also received some in my e-mail box. Something strange happening, but not sure what. Started deleting e-mails without looking at them unless I knew the sender, but not sure that's a protection. Let us know if we can do anything to help get to the bottom of this.

ok....this sounds like something the Klez virus does. It sends emails to people in your address book, but changes the return email address to make it look like it was from someone else in your address book. SS, that postmaster email from yahoo that you got is very similar to things that this virus does also.

I advise everyone with problems or funny emails to check this link for info regarding this particular virus:
http://[email protected]

you can also download a tool that will remove this particular virus. better to be safe than sorry i say

Sugarsprinkles 09-09-2002 09:27 AM

Thanks for the info, legend. I went to both the link you provided and also to McAfee's home page since that's the program I use.
I updated my anti-virus program and scanned twice and it still came up clean. So I really am stumped.

Ironwood 09-09-2002 10:27 AM

This particular one also attempts to disable your virus protection. From what I read, you could search for wink*.exe as evidence that you've been infected.

Sugarsprinkles 09-09-2002 12:14 PM

Thanks for the suggestion Ironwood. I did the search and it also came up negative. <sigh>

GUYS!

This IS PROBABLY that dang Klez virus...I don't know which version though.

My McAffee scan did NOT pick this up but the free scans I do every few weeks or so at Trend Micro DID pick it up.

The thing with the KLEZ virus is that it disables your virus scanning device that's ON your computer...so it's useless.

The empty emails and crazy subject lines along WITH a familiar name (oh yes, and the size of the message, being around 100+ K's) are exactly what the KLEZ does and how it operates.

Please perform a scan using Trend Micro...the virus almost didn't LET me do the scan there. It actually SHUT DOWN my computer ever time I went to the T/M site to perform the scan. It took half a dozen tries before I was able to get all the way THRU the scan.

Here is the link to the FREE SCAN..please do it as it sounds like you've all recieved the virus.

p.s. this was by FAR one of the most frustrating bugs I've ever recieved...very difficult to find and remove. It's a tricky one.

Good luck!
