family tree/genealogy type stuff
Hey all
This is a bit of a long shot really - but thought I'd ask here as I'm a bit stuck. Basically I've been doing my family tree now for a while and have got most of my lines traced back into Ireland - to about 1800. However, I discovered that my Great Great Uncle emigrated from NW England over to Michigan in 1917, settled there married and had a family. So I've got lots of American cousins and stuff that I knew nothing about. I found loads of old pictures and found out the name of his wife/kids etc - but I'd really like to find a marriage certificate for him as it would help me trace back my American relations further. I believe they lived in Flint. I've tried looking on Ancestry.com - but not had much luck - they've a lot of stuff on there, but it seems just not the stuff I need. Does anyone know where I can get hold of copies of marriage certificates and birth certificates for the US - or somewhere where I can write/email to? Like I said - a long shot, but I thought someone on here might know. Cheers, cavey xx |
I don't know what online records are available to you over there, but 1917 was the last half of WWI. Perhaps military records could lead to new paths if he served.

Most Registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages and their counterparts will charge you for a copy of each certificate extract.

The Mormons in Utah have the most comprehensive genealogy database in the US. I'll see if I can find the URL.

You could also look for the county that Flint, Mich is in and contact the county court house for records, a lot of them have web sites now. Most county court houses charge between $5 and $15 US for copies of records.

Thanks for your help, guys. Lilith, I think I managed to find the link to the mormon site - there's a mormon temple near where I live that I can visit to view the records, but so far nothing has turned up. I have his Social Security Death Index Number, but I don't think that will be of any help in trying to trace his marriage...
Scarecrow - thanks, I'll try and look it up :) ((hugs)) to you all! cavey xx |
